Loz’s 2020 Masters Picks.

Loz’s 2020 Masters Picks.

I just want to start by saying how beeping excited i am to sit and watch the golf this week. If ever there is a moment to warrant sitting in front of the TV all weekend it has to be the Masters at Augusta in November during lockdown. This could honestly be the most tightly contested Major in a long time, providing Bryson doesn’t just turn up and run away with it. So time to get an ‘essential’ shop in, fill the fridge full of beer and snacks, even invest in a footstool or better still a footspa if you don’t already have one and buckle up.

I have managed, somehow, to narrow my picks down to just five players, don’t ask me how ive done that. So here you have it my 5 picks for the 2020 US Masters.

Xander Schauffele

How good is this guy? He has finished in the top five in half of the majors he has entered, how crazy is that? This guy is winning majors, it’s just a case of when not if. He’s in pretty decent form as well going into, winning the Tour Championship, then coming 5th in the US open before finishing second at the CJ Cup. Let’s not also forget Schauffele finished second at last years masters after holing a clutch putt on 18 to tie with Brooks. He seems to have finished second a lot, but look at Jack Nicklaus he won 18 majors but he also finished second in 15 as well..

I like Xander this week, I like Xander a lot.

Odds: 14/1

Matthew Wolff

Talking of good guys Matt Wolff is definitely one of those. I love his swing and where he gets to at impact, plus his mentality seems spot on for such a young guy. He’s finished in the top five in both his major starts at just 21 years old. Will he have learnt a hell of a lot from his defeat to Bryson at the US Open? Absolutely, that loss should have put years and wisdom on his back. Tom Kite once said ‘you must lose a major before you win one.’

If Wolffy gets this over the line he will become the youngest player since Tiger Woods won his first masters at 21 years and 3 months. That would be some feat. That said it might be a bit harder to win it by the 12 shots Tiger did that year though. I like everything about this guy and he has to be in my picks for the week. His value is outstanding, at the time of writing you can get 40/1 on him being slipped into the green jacket.

Odds: 40/1

John Rahm

Augusta form figures read 27-4-9. Two top 10 finishes in the last two years at the masters for Rahmbo matched with unbelievable form going in to this means you simply cannot ignore him. The world number 2 loves it round there and he has won 2 of his last 9 events. Augusta is all about fast starts, it’s not a course you play catch up on. If Rahm starts well on Thursday it’s definitely one of these 👀.

Odds: 10/1

Patrick Cantlay

A lot can be said for Cantlays performance at last years Masters – he was at 12 under standing on the famous 16th hole par 3. On Sunday the pin position was arguably the easiest. Shaped for a nice draw hit the right hand side of the green and watch it run to the hole. Cantlay made 4 after blocking one right. Had he made birdie like most of the field he would have been on the 17th tee at 13 under – the same score Woods won with.

Has he had the form running into this? Absolutely. He’s off the back of winning the ZoZo Championship after beating down both JT & Rahm on Sunday from the penultimate group. 6 time winner Jack Nicklaus said of Cantlay ‘I think Brooks plays much like Patrick. Brooks is a strong player, plays hard and doesn’t back off, I haven’t seen Patrick back off, he plays pretty aggressively.’ Comparing him to Major specialist Brooks is a glowing comparison. I really like Cantlay and with his suited right to left shot shape 25/1 is a great price.

Odds: 25/1

Tyrell Hatton

I can’t actually believe I am writing this or picking Tyrell. Another outsider in the betting market but at 28/1 can we ignore him? Put simply no. Although his Augusta form doesn’t stack up to his counterparts he is having the season of his life and is a fantastic scrambler. Hatton also performs better at this time of year. He recently won the BMW at Wentworth and then finished a fine 7th at the Houston open as a warm up last week. Could a November Masters be a perfect fit for Hatton, quite possibly. Lets get it.

Odds: 28/1

Augusta will favour the longer hitting which will also fall into the hands of Tony Finau who finished in the top five last year and was paired with Tiger for the win so he could be worth some each way juice. Rory Mcilroy could make it a career slam, is this the occasion he does it? At an Autumn Augusta with no fans my head and heart are both telling me no, it doesn’t seem to fit the script. Cameron Champ at 80/1 could also be worth some each money with his 5th at the USPGA being a nice little indicator.
